The saddle rails feature Picatinny rails machined from aircraft grade 6061-T6 aluminum, which are  mil-spec hard anodized and provide an extremely durable non-glare matte finish.  The basic saddle rail design provides a robust mounting platform suitable for mounting a variety of optical sights, while a second version, which is nearly identical to the basic version, also
includes a Mesa Tactical four, six, or eight shell SureShell shotshell carrier mounted on the left side of the receiver. Both versions are manufactured in compliance with MIL-STD-1913 Picatinny specifications, and no gunsmithing is required for installation. These new saddle rails offer a perfect solution for adding optical sights and SureShell shotshell carriers to Remington shotguns equipped with Mesa Tactical's new LEO telescoping stock and pistol grip system.

The principle difference between one model of SureShell and another, aside from capacity, is the backing plate, which is designed to mount the carrier assembly on a particular model of shotgun. Side-mount SureShell shotshell carriers for Mossberg , Remington and Benelli M1 shotguns use the trigger group pin holes to secure the assemblies to the weapon; the Benelli M2 Tactical, Benelli M4/M1014, Benelli SuperNova Tactical and some Mossberg 500/590 versions take advantage of the factory-tapped rail mounting holes in the tops of these shotguns and include integrated Pictanny optics mounting rails; another version with an integrated rail is the saddle-mount design for Remington; SureShell Carriers for M4 SOPMOD stocks feature special hardware for attachment to these buttstocks; Adapter Mount SureShell shotshell carriers are designed to be attached to Mesa Tactical Telescoping Stock Adapter accessory mount points.

  • Components

The following is a breakdown of the various components that make up the SureShell Aluminum Carrier system.

  • Aluminum SureShell Carrier with Integrated Picatinny Rail

SureShell Saddle Rails feature a MIL-STD-1913 (NATO STANAG 4694) Picatinny sight rail along the top, and a four-, six- or eight-shot SureShell aluminum shotshell carrier yoke on the left side of the receiver. The rail is notched at the rear to accommodate Scattergun/Wilson style ghost ring sights, and extends to the front of the shotgun receiver (5 inch rail), 2¾ inches past the front of the receiver (8½ inch rail), or just beyond the barrel's magazine lug (20 inch rail).SureShell shotshell carriers are assemblies comprising an aluminum yoke and backing plate and a Santoprene® elastomer tube. The yoke features four to eight vertical bores .700" or .810" in diameter to accept 12-gauge shotgun shells. The shells are securely retained by the elastomer tube interfering with the bores. In many cases, shells can be confidently retained in a brass down as well as a brass up configuration, though brass up is most secure.

  • Santoprene® Elastomer

The elastomer used to interfere with the shell bores and thus retain the shells in the SureShell shotshell carrier is made of tough Santoprene thermoplastic. We are required to publish the following message to comply with California's Proposition 65:

WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.

  • Elastomer Stiffnes

SureShell carriers are assembled at the factory with a black Santoprene elastomer tibe with a shore value, or stiffness, of A64. This has proven to be optimal for most customers and in most situations. However, some customers require a stiffer elastomer and for those operators we have included an alternative white elastomer tube with a shore value of A73. The black elastomer tube can be swapped for the white one if tighter shell retention is required.

  • Chicago Screws

Several platforms use custom fasteners called Chicago screws. These are paired male and female fasteners that, when screwed together, meet at their respective shoulders for a precise fit on whatever platform they are made for (each shotgun platform will use different length Chicago screws). Ideally, when they are tightened against each other, they also secure the shell carrier without pinching the receiver. Two hex keys are provided for each screw size. Sometimes it is necessary to screw the fasteners in from both sides simultaneously.

*It is important to realize that once the Chicago screws are tightened against each other, they aren't going to get any tighter, and applying too much torque will snap them at the center. It is useful to practice tightening them outside the shotgun before installation, to get a hang for how tight they can get, and also to clean the threads of any dirt or debris.

Optional SureShell Carriers

  • Adapter Mount SureShell Aluminum Carrier

The Adapter Mount SureShell shotshell carrier is designed to be used with shotguns already equipped with the Mesa Tactical High-tube or Lowtube Telescoping Stock Adapter. If you do not already have a Mesa Tactical Telescoping Stock Adapter system installed on your shotgun, this carrier cannot be used. The other Mesa Tactical SureShell carriers described in this guide can be fitted to shotgun receivers without the stock adapter installed.

  • Side Mount SureShell Shotshell Carriers

Machined from 6061-T6 hard anodized aircraft aluminum, the shell holders incorporate an entirely new internal elastomer shell retention system that eliminates the need for the flexible  plastic shell retainers used on conventional shell holders. A unique arrangement of threaded  fasteners secures the shell holder to the shotgun receiver without the risk of stripping threads in  the aluminum bracket. The Shell Holders will be available in four-shell, six-shell and eight-shell versions. Four shell versions will be available for mounting on the right side of the shotgun receiver, while all versions will fit on the left side. SureShell shotshell carriers are available in three configurations: four-shell, six-shell and eight-shell. The six-shell and eight-shell configurations can be installed on the left side of the receiver, while the four-shell carriers can be installed on either side of the receiver. Carriers can also be installed pointed back toward the stock.

  • Stock Mount Shell Carriers

These shell carriers mount to the sides of standard M4 SOPMOD buttstocks, to the Urbino Tactical stock cheek riser, or Benelli pistol grip fixed stock (does not fit Benelli M4 stock or Urbino Tactical stock).

Specifications

  • Forend Compatibility

Factory shotgun forends, except "tactical" forends, often feature significantreceiver overlap when the bolt is pulled back. These forends will  need to be cut down or replaced with aftermarket "tactical" forends to be used with some SureShell shotshell carriers. Before you install a SureShell shotshell carrier, measure your forend's receiver overlap and compare it to the furthest forward point of the shotshell carrier. Then cut any potential overlap or interference off the end of theforend with a miter saw or a rotary arm saw for a perfect fit.

  • Platforms

The SureShell Aluminum Shotshell Carrier is available for the following 12 gauge shotgun platforms:

Remington 870, Remington 1100, Remington 11-87, Versa Max
Benelli M2, Benelli M4, Benelli Supernova
    Mossberg 500/590
    Kel-Tec KSG

  • Remington 870/1100/11-87

Saddle Rails for the Remington 870, 1100 and 11-87 are aluminum brackets that wrap around the top of the shotgun receiver, with a Picatinny optics rail at the top. The factory trigger pins are replaced by an internally threaded steel pin (in the rear) and paired Chicago screws (up front), to which both sides of the saddle rail are securely bolted. SureShell Saddle Rails feature a MIL-STD-1913 (NATO STANAG 4694) Picatinny sight rail along the top, and a four-, six- or eight-shot SureShell aluminum shotshell carrier yoke on the left side of the receiver. The rail isnotched at the rear to accommodate Scattergun/Wilson style ghost ring sights, and extends to the front of the shotgun receiver (5 inch rail), 2¾ inches past the front of the receiver (8½ inch rail), or just beyond the barrel's magazine lug (20 inch rail). The 20 inch rails are anchored at the front by a clamp. They are available with a barrel clamp or a magazine clamp, or no clamp at all (for customers who already have clamps).

No other shell carrier mounting method is as secure or looks as good. No gunsmithing is required to install the SureShell Saddle Rail, except for optional forend alterations as described above. Saddle Rails are also available without the shell carriers. Click Here
