Mesa Tactical SureShell Aluminum Shotshell Carriers with Rail combine a shell carrier with a MIL-STD-1913 (NATO STANAG 4694) Picatinny rail that accepts optical, sights, lasers or accessories. These shotshell carrier/rail systems mount via a "saddle" style method (Remington shotguns) or by using the drilled and tapped holes on top of the shotgun's receiver.

SureShell Aluminum Shotshell Carriers with Rail are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum and use Mesa Tactical's innovative rubber friction retention system to firmly and reliable hold shells in place until needed. Four, six and eight shell configurations and multiple rail lengths available.

The Integrated Rail SureShell shotshell carrier design for the Benelli M2 Tactical, Benelli M4/M1014, Benelli SuperNova and Mossberg 500/590 platforms is radically different from the side mount designs. Instead of a stamped backing plate, the shell carrier yoke is attached to a machined bracket with an integral Picatinny (MIL-STD 1913) sight rail.

The design allows the ShotShell assembly to be installed on the top of the shotgun by taking advantage of the factory tapped Picatinny (MIL-STD 1913) rail holes.

With the Benelli shotguns, the shell carrier assembly is mounted directly onto the shotgun receiver. With the Mossberg platforms, a steel mounting cleat is first installed and the shell carrier is fastened to the cleat.
BENELLI RAIL HOLE PATTERN

Many customers will purchase SureShell carriers with rails for Benelli M1 shotguns that have not been drilled and tapped at the factory for an optics rail, but which will be drilled and tapped at home or by a gunsmith.

We recommend this work be performed only on those shotguns that are fully radiused at the top of the receivers (ie, they do not have a flat running down the top of the receiver). This is because the flat reduces number of threads that the mounting screws will be able to engage, and thus could reduce the reliability of the mount. It is also best that the work be performed by an experienced gunsmith who has the necessary tools and skills to do a proper job.

The mounting screws for the Benelli M1, Benelli M2 Tactical and Benelli M4 SureShell carriers with rails are patterned on the factory screws for the Benelli M4's optics rail. These use an unusual #8-40 thread.

The Benelli M4 and Benelli SuperNova have different hole patterns; the Benelli SuperNova uses a different fastener.

SYSTEM CONCEPT

  • Aluminum SureShell Carrier with Integrated Picatinny Rail

SureShell Carriers with Integrated Rails feature a MIL-STD-1913 (NATO STANAG 4694) Picatinny sight rail along the top, and a four-, six- or eight-shot SureShell aluminum shotshell carrier yoke on the left side of the receiver. The rail is notched at the rear to accommodate Scattergun/Wilson style ghost ring sights. SureShell shotshell carriers are assemblies comprising an aluminum yoke and backing plate and a Santoprene® elastomer tube. The yoke features four to eight vertical bores .700" or .810" in diameter to accept 12-gauge shotgun shells. The shells are securely retained by the elastomer tube interfering with the bores. In many cases, shells can be confidently retained in a brass down as well as a brass up configuration, though brass up is most secure.

  • Santoprene® Elastomer

The elastomer used to interfere with the shell bores and thus retain the shells in the SureShell shotshell carrier is made of tough Santoprene thermoplastic. We are required to publish the following message to comply with California's Proposition 65:

WARNING: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm.

  • Elastomer Stiffnes

SureShell carriers are assembled at the factory with a black Santoprene elastomer tibe with a shore value, or stiffness, of A64. This has proven to be optimal for most customers and in most situations. However, some customers require a stiffer elastomer and for those operators we have included an alternative white elastomer tube with a shore value of A73. The black elastomer tube can be swapped for the white one if tighter shell retention is required.

  • Chicago Screws

Several platforms use custom fasteners called Chicago screws. These are paired male and female fasteners that, when screwed together, meet at their respective shoulders for a precise fit on whatever platform they are made for (each shotgun platform will use different length Chicago screws). Ideally, when they are tightened against each other, they also secure the shell carrier without pinching the receiver. Two hex keys are provided for each screw size. Sometimes it is necessary to screw the fasteners in from both sides simultaneously.

*It is important to realize that once the Chicago screws are tightened against each other, they aren't going to get any tighter, and applying too much torque will snap them at the center. It is useful to practice tightening them outside the shotgun before installation, to get a hang for how tight they can get, and also to clean the threads of any dirt or debris.

OTHER TYPES OF SURESHELL CARRIERS

  • Adapter Mount SureShell Aluminum Carrier

The Adapter Mount SureShell shotshell carrier is designed to be used with shotguns already equipped with the Mesa Tactical High-tube or LEO Telescoping Stock Adapter. If you do not already have a Mesa Tactical Telescoping Stock Adapter system installed on your shotgun, this carrier cannot be used. The other Mesa Tactical SureShell carriers described in this guide can be fitted to shotgun receivers without the stock adapter installed.

  • Side Mount SureShell Shotshell Carriers

Machined from 6061-T6 hard anodized aircraft aluminum, the shell holders incorporate an entirely new internal elastomer shell retention system that eliminates the need for the flexible  plastic shell retainers used on conventional shell holders. A unique arrangement of threaded  fasteners secures the shell holder to the shotgun receiver without the risk of stripping threads in  the aluminum bracket. The Shell Holders will be available in four-shell, six-shell and eight-shell versions. Four shell versions will be available for mounting on the right side of the shotgun receiver, while all versions will fit on the left side. SureShell shotshell carriers are available in three configurations: four-shell, six-shell and eight-shell. The six-shell and eight-shell configurations can be installed on the left side of the receiver, while the four-shell carriers can be installed on either side of the receiver. Carriers can also be installed pointed back toward the stock.

  • Stock Mount Shell Carriers

These shell carriers mount to the sides of standard M4 SOPMOD buttstocks, to the Urbino Tactical stock cheek riser, or Benelli pistol grip fixed stock (does not fit Benelli M4 stock or Urbino Tactical stock).

SPECIFICATIONS

  • Forend Compatibility

Factory shotgun forends, except "tactical" forends, often feature significantreceiver overlap when the bolt is pulled back. These forends will  need to be cut down or replaced with aftermarket "tactical" forends to be used with some SureShell shotshell carriers. Before you install a SureShell shotshell carrier, measure your forend's receiver overlap and compare it to the furthest forward point of the shotshell carrier. Then cut any potential overlap or interference off the end of theforend with a miter saw or a rotary arm saw for a perfect fit.
 Platforms

The SureShell Aluminum Shotshell Carrier with Integrated Rail is available for the following 12 gauge shotgun platforms:

Remington 870, Remington 1100, Remington 11-87, Versa Max
Benelli M2, Benelli M4, Benelli Supernova
    Mossberg 500/590
    Kel-Tec KSG

Benelli

While the Benelli M2 Tactical semi-automatic and Benelli SuperNova® pump-action shotgun feature factory-tapped rail mounting holes in the top of the receiver, the Benelli M4 and M1014 are shipped with a top Picatinny sight rail. These provided us with an opportunity to develop SureShell aluminum shotshell carrier mounting solutions for Benelli shotguns that are streamlined and very robust.

Receiver mount SureShell aluminum shotshell carriers for the Benelli M2, M4 and M1014 feature mounting brackets with integral top Picatinny sight rails. These brackets are secured to the weapon using the top mounting screw holes. The SureShell aluminum shotshell carriers are thus slung on the left side of the receiver, securely fastened at the top. No other shell carrier mounting method is as secure or looks as good. SureShell aluminum shotshell carriers for the Benelli M2 Tactical can be installed on Benelli M1 shotguns with round-top receivers by tapping the top of the shotgun receiver with #8-40 threads. Consult a gunsmith.

Extra weight on the weapon may adversely affect the reliable cycling of inertia-operated shotguns such as the Benelli M1 or M2 when used with low-recoil ammunition. The Benelli M4 is gas-operated and has no such cycling sensitivity.

No other shell carrier mounting method is as secure or looks as good. No gunsmithing is required to install the SureShell Carrier with Integrated Rail, except for optional forend alterations as described above. Picatinny Rails are also available without the shell carriers. Click Here
